Vanniyar Sangam sends notice to Suriya of Rs 5 crore in damages

On Monday, the Vanniyar Sangam issued a legal warning to Suriya, director TJGnanvel, and Amazon India. It requested an unconditional apology, the removal of scenes from the movie Jai Bhim, which it called “defamatory” for the Vanniyar community, and Rs 5 million compensation within seven working days. According to a new report, the Vanniyar Sangam State president has sent a notice for actor Suriya as well as director TJGnanavel, requesting an unconditional apology and the removal of certain scenes.

What exactly is the issue?

Vanniyar Sangam says that the film is based upon real events. However, Rajakannu’s torturer has been intentionally depicted as a Vanniyar character. Jai Bhim tells the story of members from the Irular tribe who were tortured and how Justice Chandru (played by Suriya) won a legal battle.

Notice stated that the crew managed to keep most of the characters’ names, including Rajakannu and advocate Chandru. However, Permalsamy, a police officer, deliberately changed the name (SI), of the sub-inspector who tortured the victim while in custody. Actor-director Raghava Lawrence watched the film and pledged to build a home for Parvathy ammal, an Irula woman whose life is the basis of critically acclaimed Tamil film Jai Bhim.
